If you believe that getting a vasectomy is emasculating and will destroy your manhood, maybe it's time that your beliefs about masculinity and manhood NEED to be destroyed.⠀
⠀
Lately, there has been much talk about vasectomies amidst conversations about abortion, namely pointing out the hypocrisy surrounding the ways that we make decisions about women's reproductive rights in the United States. ⠀
⠀
For many men, when starting to talk about the crotchal area the air is immediately filled with squeamishness that we try to cover up with awkward giggling and tired "stay away from my junk" deflections. Raise the topic of vasectomies and immediately the draw bridge gets pulled up, the moat lit on fire, and we begin to guard our genitals like a kingdom about to be overrun by a horde of foreign invaders.⠀
⠀
Herein lies the problem, we equate the state of our genitals with our beliefs about manhood and masculinity. At a very base level, we believe that size, virility, and our ability to plant our seed is what determines one's manliness. Not only does this way of thinking reinforce homophobia, transphobia, and a culture of toxic masculinity, it's simply not true.⠀
⠀
Like many men, throughout my life, I have bought into destructive understandings of masculinity. I will always be a work in progress, but I have come to know that gender is fluid and when I allow myself to embrace the ways that people express gender, I more fully experience the beauty of God's creation.⠀
⠀
But back to vasectomies. I had one and never looked back. Sure the jokes made at the expense of my soreness were quite entertaining, but I have never regretted it. This was the best option for me and my spouse as part of our family planning (AKA "We are done." and out of all the surgical options available to us, this was the least intrusive. ⠀
⠀
We need to normalize talking about these things, but I know that it is not easy for everyone, so if you are thinking about vasectomy and have questions, please feel free to ask. I can't give you medical advice, but I can help to assuage your fears and anxieties.⠀
