Charlie Russo, author of "Striking Distance: Bruce Lee and the Dawn of Martial Arts in America" said this about Lee's connection to the city:⁠
“There’s no doubt that whatever contributions Bruce had to MMA originated out of Oakland as a result of his experiences here.” ⁠
