If you’ve been around hockey for a while, you know the name: Matt Cooke. Widely regarded as one of the most hated players of his generation, stemming from an extremely lengthy history of delivering cheap shots to numerous players.

On March 7, 2010, Cooke hit then-#NHLBruins center Marc Savard in the head with a blindside check (2nd slide). Savard only played 25 more career games after the hit, and was forced to retire early at just 33.

Cooke never spoke to Savard after the hit, nor did the #Pens forward receive any sort of discipline for it. 

Cooke did receive retribution however, but it would be #Thrashers rookie Evander Kane that would knock him out with just one punch in a scrap in April 2010, just a month after Cooke’s hit on Savard.

Kane was a popular man for his KO of Cooke, so much that he says he even received a gift basket from the Bruins as a thank-you, and still to this day calls Cooke a “dirty player.”

Cooke was suspended six times in his NHL career.
