An interesting fact about the cherry trees in National Mall and Memorial Parks is that these were not the first cherry trees Japan gave to the United States. Some of the first batch of 2000 trees that were sent over in 1910 were found to have diseases that the Department of Agriculture feared would spread to other native species, so they were all burned! Luckily, this wasn't a massive diplomatic incident and Japan sent over 3020 healthy trees two years later. • • 📷 by streeterpeter • • Remember to use #nationalparkspartnership on your best national park pictures for your chance to be featured. • • #washingtondc #dc #igdc #acreativedc #washingtonmonument #smithsonian #dcphotographer #districtofcolumbia #cherryblossoms
