Growing up visiting the East Coast because her parents lived in Maine during their 20s, graduate Caroline Owen knew she wanted to attend college somewhere around there.

“Even though [my parents] didn’t end up raising their family there, they always encouraged me to move to the East Coast as an adult if I liked it,” Owen said.

The University of New Hampshire, UNH, is an hour from Boston and an hour from Portland, Maine, so a good distance between major cities.

“So even when I was little, I felt like I would move there at some point,” she said. “I thought college was the perfect time because I wanted to get my foot in the door for potential careers in an East Coast city.”

When she visited the University of New Hampshire, it checked all of her boxes.

“The campus is so beautiful,” Owen said. “It has the perfect amount of students, and the business school offers a lot of unique opportunities.”.

Owen will be majoring in business administration and minoring in architectural studies. She chose to major in business in part because it is such a versatile major.

“You learn a lot about investment, real estate and leadership,” Owen said.

Her minor in architectural studies stems from the bond she has with her dad.

“I wanted to minor in architectural studies as well because I have always just been so fascinated by architecture, design and building,” Owen said. “My dad worked in construction and design my entire life so it’s always been something we bonded over.”

The University of New Hampshire was Owen’s dream school, but it was also a safety for her because it eliminated a lot of the stress that comes with applying for college.

“As soon as I visited the University of New Hampshire, I knew that’s where I wanted to go, but of course when you’re applying to college, you have to think about plenty of schools and keep an open mind,” she said. “I felt lucky because even though it was my top choice, I didn’t have to worry too much because it’s not impossible to get into or anything.”

Reflecting on high school, Owen says her favorite memory was being able to watch everyone who she’s known for a while grow up.
