Munzir El Nezzel, who lost his leg in a bomb blast in Syria, and his son, Mustafa, who was born without limbs because of the medications his mother had to take after being sickened by chemical weapons during the war in Syria, landed in Rome on Friday.

Italy decided to grant the family asylum following efforts by the organizers of the Siena International Photo Awards, to bring the family from Turkey, where they had fled after Syria.

“The journey of Munzir and Mustafa to Italy with his family begins. Electronic prosthesis treatment will be started there,” photographer Mehmet Aslan wrote on his Instagram two days ago.

The picture of Mustafa and his father, which was taken in January 2021 by the Turkish photographer Mehmet Aslan, and called “Hardship of Life,” was declared photo of the year at the Siena awards last year.

“We are coming, thank you. We love Italia,” the 6-year-old Mustafa said in a video message.
