⚠️ TW: violence 

A viral video of a foreign domestic worker being dragged by her hair and beaten on the street in the town of Jourat al-Ballout has sparked fresh concerns over Lebanon’s exploitative kafala (sponsorship) system. 

Lebanese Internal Security Forces announced on Wednesday that they have arrested the assailant in the video and the case is currently being investigated.

The kafala system allows Lebanese employers to sponsor foreign workers and tie their legal residency to their employers. Under the system, workers don’t have access to their passport, freedom of movement, right to leave the country, and change jobs without their employers’ consent.

Lebanon’s Labor Ministry estimates that the country hosts 250,000 migrant domestic workers, the majority of them women from Africa and Asia.
