Reposting this nice feature by the  bloodbankhawaii **** Meet John W. Thielst, managing principal and vice president of coffmanengineers in Honolulu. What you might not know about him is that he's also a long-time donor. In fact, he first tried donating blood in his twenties but was temporarily deferred due to working in a foreign country. Undeterred, he checked in periodically until the deferral was lifted - driven by his desire to give back to his community. Now, John regularly donates and because his blood type is O- (universal donor), he drops by every 8 weeks at the Young Street Donor Center. When asked why he's been donating for so long, he simply said "How often do you get the opportunity to help a few people, plus it's so easy." Mahalo John, for your humble and unwavering commitment to saving lives and helping to create a healthier Hawaii. During National Blood Donor Month, we honor and thank all donors who are Tough Enough to lead by example.⠀
