#SummerXMoody: From Des Moines, Iowa to Austin, Texas and now Dublin. And we’re not talking about Dublin, Texas! This utjschool student, Becca Youngers, recently completed a Maymester on documentary photography storytelling, led by donna.decesare.photo, in Dublin, Ireland!

“My experience was nothing short of spectacular. To have the opportunity to spend an entire month in one foreign country during college is something that is incredible on its own. When you combine that with the course content, which focused on getting involved with specific communities in Dublin and sharing their stories, it is even more amazing. It’s hard not to fall in love with the country and the city! Getting to have Professor De Cesare as a mentor whose work is so inspiring is something I will always cherish.”

She was able to utlize skills learned in her journalism classes at Moody in actual field work. “But things like empathy and ethical considerations when covering these serious topics were the most important things I put into my practice. The School of Journalism and Media at Moody teaches us, most importantly, to be good humans when we go out into the field.”

Becca encourages everyone to study abroad if they have the opportunity to. She was hesitant about it at first but her experience was life-changing. “Moody is an amazing college within an amazing university, and a huge thing Moody promotes is experiential learning. Going abroad and completing a course like documentary photography storytelling is exactly what Moody wants its students to get out of their time on the Forty Acres. International education teaches you about cultural differences, introduces you to new things, makes you more independent and most importantly makes you a better human! You will never regret taking the risk and experiencing something new; you will only regret not doing it!”

She is super excited about The House of the Dragon Season Two and got to stop by a Game of Thrones filming location in Ireland. After being in Ireland for a month, she recommends the classic, “Normal People,” by Sally Rooney. What are your book recommendations? List them below!
