Back in 2013, NBA center Jason Collins became the first male athlete to publicly announce that he was gay while still active in an American professional sport. 💪⁣⁣
•⁣⁣
While there is still a lingering perception that male athletes are slower to accept the idea of gay players than their female counterparts, athletes like Collins, and more recently ex-NFLer Carl Nassib coming out, have propelled acceptance forward, and we hope that trend continues for years (and seasons) to come. 🙌⁣⁣

The GIST is continuing to highlight important LGBTQIA+ figures in sports this month, as well as important cultural moments in pride’s history. We want to continue to use our platform to elevate underrepresented voices in today’s media. ✊ #thegist⁣⁣⁣
