Who’s tailgating this weekend?

Football season is finally here and that means long days at the stadium for some people. Here are my tips to help your tailgate be as healthy as possible.

Tailgating typically means many hours surrounded with food and alcohol. Therefore one of the best things you can do is plan ahead. Plan to bring healthy foods that you can snack on all day long. My go to is a big tray of raw veggies with a yummy dip such as hummus or spinach dip. You can never eat too many carrots cucumbers or sugar snap peas and these are foods that are going to fill you up and keep you full and give you that nice crunch you may be looking for.

The biggest thing I do when I’m tailgating is delay my first bite. I try to prevent eating that first bite of food as long as possible. Typically as soon as I start eating I’m going to be grazing the rest of the time. So if I can get to the tailgate and socialize and enjoy my friends without food for the first hour or two then that typically ends up being a huge win. Then, once it’s time to eat sit down and eat a full plate of food. Load up on protein, find the vegetables and other high-fiber foods and a little bit of anything else that you want. This will help fill you up and keep you full. And ultimately help prevent grazing the entire time.

lastly manage your alcohol. Tailgating typically means drinking all day long. Alcohol can really add up over time. So aim to choose low-calorie alcohol choices and maybe space them with a big glass of water to slow down your pace.

Bottom line regardless of how your tailgate goes good or bad remember that one day does not make or break your progress it’s what you do after the potentially well so make it your goal to reset and get back on track at the next meal or the next day.
