Meet Great-Grandma Frances 👋

In 1937, Great-Grandma Frances and Great-Grandpa Albert left Nebraska in the wake of the Dust Bowl. Now, I don’t know how much you know about the Dust Bowl, but it really blew. Literally. And also figuratively. The Dust Bowl was an environmental disaster caused by drought and destructive farming practices that stripped the land of its topsoil and blew it across the Midwest.

Great-Grandma Frances used to tell our family stories about the dust storms that would come rolling across the plains. As they approached the house, she would run from window to window, stuffing each one with rags to keep the dust out. But it didn’t work. By the time the wind stopped blowing, everything was covered in dust.

When Great-Grandma Frances and Great-Grandpa Albert moved to California with their four young sons, they also brought with them a new philosophy: “Leave the land better than you found it.”

And the land they started farming? It belonged to Great-Grandma Frances. Her dad bought it for her and put in her name, which was super rare at the time – women didn’t own land in the 1930s!

We still farm Great-Grandma Frances’s field today – we call it “Grandma’s 40.” Here are third- and fourth-generation father-daughter duo Bryce and Brita Lundberg standing in it last year with a photo of Great-Grandma Frances herself. And while agriculture continues to be a male-dominated field (no pun intended), here’s a grain of truth: Lundberg Family Farms is majority women-owned!
