Okay, we know what you’re thinking: What the duck do wetlands have to do with rice?! You’ve come to the right place 🤓

🌾 Our family’s farms are part of the Pacific Flyway, a major migratory pathway for more than a billion birds. Yeah, a billion. But our region’s natural wetlands have been disappearing for decades. Today, up to 95% of them are gone! So, each winter, we flood some of our fields to replicate California’s natural wetlands, providing vital food and habitat for thousands of migratory birds as they travel the Pacific Flyway.

🦢 The birds aren’t the only ones who benefit. They also chow down on weed seeds, which is great for regenerative organic farmers like us (you know, since we use water instead of chemicals to kill weeds). Plus, the birds’ feet press nutrient-rich rice straw into contact with the soil, which decomposes the rice straw and turns it into mulch for the next year’s crop!

🛁 What about all that water? Well, since our region’s heavy adobe clay soil holds water like a bathtub, that means when the birds fly away, we can return water to rivers and streams, where zooplankton from the fields help turn starving salmon into floodplain fatties. Right, CaliforniaTrout?! 🐟

🌱 We also grow cover crops during the winter because we believe it ALL starts with healthy soil. Cover crops can help sequester carbon, restore nutrients to the soil, reduce weeds, prevent erosion AND provide nesting habitat for ducks.

🦆 When we find duck nests in our fields, we pause our work to partner with calwaterfowl and rescue the eggs by hand so they can be incubated, hatched, raised, and released! Yes, it’s ducking adorable, but it’s also an embodiment of our commitment to regenerative organic farming practices AND our Great-Grandpa Albert’s philosophy to “leave the land better than you found it.”

Pretty ducking cool, right? And if we care this much about wetlands, imagine how much we care about our rice. Link in bio to learn more! 🔗
