Last week, my family and I attended the 2023 Rice Outlook Conference, the largest rice conference in the United States, where we were honored to receive this year’s USA Rice Sustainability Award! After accepting the award as a family, my five-year-old grandson and eight-year-old granddaughter Elin posed for a picture with the commemorative crystal (swipe to see the photo). Sure, some people might not let a five-year-old hold a glass award. But my grandson Grayson and my granddaughter Elin? They’re the reason this award means so much to us. ⁠

Our family’s commitment to sustainability started with my grandparents, Albert and Frances. In 1937, they left Nebraska in the wake of the Dust Bowl with their four sons, a flatbed Chevy truck, a Farmall tractor, and a new philosophy: ⁠

“Leave the land better than you found it.” ⁠
⁠
Our family has been through all kinds of changes since then, but every generation has worked towards that same goal. From going organic before it was cool to powering and offsetting our Richvale-based manufacturing facilities with 100% renewable electricity to providing habitat for hundreds of species and even rescuing duck eggs. ⁠

We’re determined to leave the land better than we found it for the next generation of our family AND yours. This award feels like validation that we’re moving in the right direction, and it is all possible because of you. Thank you for supporting our family and our farm. And thank you to think_rice and californiarice as well. This recognition means the world coming from our fellow rice farmers. ❤️🌾 ⁠
