See this? This is no ordinary dirt. This is HEAVY ADOBE CLAY SOIL. Yeah, clay! If we ever decide to stop farming, we can start making pottery. But we probably won’t do that. Because this stuff is PERFECT for growing regenerative organic rice. So, in honor of world soil day, let us tell you ‘bout our best friend! 👇 ⁠

🛁 Our region’s heavy adobe clay soil holds water like a bathtub, which means water sits on top of the soil instead of sinking into it. That means we can use water to drown weeds instead of dousing our fields with chemicals AND return water to rivers and streams when we’re done with it! ⁠

💧 Our friends at CaliforniaRice found that 40% of the water used to grow rice gets recycled, flowing to neighboring farms to help irrigate different crops, traveling to wildlife refuges for reuse, or returning to the environment. Some even flows back to the river, where zooplankton from the fields can help turn starving salmon into floodplain fatties. Right, CaliforniaTrout?! 🐟 ⁠

🦢 Our soil also helps us replicate our region’s natural wetlands, which have been disappearing for decades. Today, 95% of them are gone! So, each winter, we flood a portion of our fields to provide habitat AND nutrition for wintering waterfowl as they travel the Pacific Flyway. But the birds aren’t the only ones who benefit. They also chow down on weed seeds, which is great for regenerative organic farmers like us. Plus, their feet press nutrient-rich rice straw into contact with the soil, which decomposes the rice straw and turns it into mulch for the next year’s crop! ⁠

🌱 We also grow cover crops during the winter because we believe it ALL starts with healthy soil. Cover crops can help sequester carbon, restore nutrients to the soil, reduce weeds, and prevent erosion. Our soil’s well-balanced diet results in an estimated 100,000 lbs. of organic matter per acre.
