Okay, this might come as a shock. Ready? Rice is a plant. 🌾

Yes, rice might be sold in the dry goods section of the grocery store next to pasta and “plant-based” rice. But rice IS a plant. It grows in the ground. And the way we grow it can make a world of difference. For example, did you know in our regenerative organic rice fields, we drown and dry up weeds instead of dousing fields with chemical herbicides?! Let’s get into the weeds, shall we? 🤓

When it comes to rice farming, there are two kinds of weeds: grass weeds and aquatic weeds. After planting (by plane!) we raise the water level *just* high enough to drown the grass weeds, but not so high that it harms the rice. This requires careful and, sometimes, near-constant observation as rice can only survive under water for about 48 hours longer than grass weeds. That’s our window to make sure the rice survives while the grass weeds drown. But here’s the thing: Aquatic weeds LOVE water. So, once the grass weeds drown, it’s time to dry up the aquatic weeds.

Dry up is a system our fore-farmers discovered as they prepared to give up on a field that had been overrun with aquatic weeds. “Let’s see how long we can let the rice dry up,” they said. They returned the water to rivers and streams and watched as the aquatic weeds shriveled in the sun, loosening their grip on the growing rice. Then, they rehydrated the fields *just* in time to bring the rice back to life. Decades later, it’s our best defense against aquatic weeds—no herbicides needed!
