Happy National Bird Day! Okay, we know what you’re thinking: What do birds have to do with rice? So glad you asked. Resident bird nerd & fourth-generation farmer Brita Lundberg explains 🤓👇 
 
For our family, there’s always been more to farming than growing quality, delicious rice. It’s about being part of something bigger: restoring and regenerating the rhythms of nature. Our farm is part of the Pacific Flyway, a major migratory pathway for birds. But the wetlands those birds depend on have been disappearing for decades due to development. Today, 95% of California’s wetlands are gone. 
 
So, each winter, we flood a portion of our fields to replicate California’s natural wetlands, providing vital habitat and nutrition for thousands of wintering waterfowl who feast on leftover rice, insects, aquatic invertebrates, and weed seeds. Their feet also press nutrient-rich rice straw into the soil, which decomposes the rice straw and turns it into mulch for next year’s crop. 
 
Pretty cool, huh? Farming regeneratively—in partnership with nature—sure has its perks. 🌾🦢
