Vincent Van Gogh painted wheat fields on the regular. He felt a connection to them for a quite GRASSY reason. "I feel a certain indebtedness to the world and out of gratitude, I want to leave some souvenir in the shape of drawings or pictures – not made to please a certain taste in art, but to express a sincere feeling.” Van Gogh expresses through symbolism and use of color his deeply felt spiritual beliefs, appreciation of manual laborers, and connection to nature. The wheat plant is the most controversial crop in history. As Yuval Harari phrases in his book Sapiens—wheat domesticated us, not the other way around. Hunter-gatherer bands took up farming on the discovery of wheat and for them, it turned out the disadvantages greatly outweighed the advantages. But as we sit here crunching on some bread, it is wrong to judge thousands of years of history from the perspective of today. A much more representative viewpoint is that of a three-year-old girl dying from malnutrition in first-century China because her father’s wheat crops have failed. Would she say ‘I am dying from malnutrition but in 2,000 years, people will have plenty to eat so my suffering is well worth the sacrifice.’? Probably not. She was just a silent hero. .
•• if you made it this far you’re into this kind of shit. Watch the movie At Eternity’s Gate (about Van Gogh) and read the book Sapiens by Yuval Harari (trippy book about us humans)
