Class of 2024 graduate Meredith Grotevant will attend Oberlin College and Conservatory, where she will take advantage of their double degree program. She will study sociology in the College of Arts and Sciences and Technology and Music and Related Arts (TIMARA) in the Conservatory of Music.

She first heard about Oberlin after receiving mail from the school. At first, she was skeptical about applying because of its location (about 31 miles southwest of Cleveland) but liked that it had a program where she could pursue both academics and music.

“I’ve been playing music since I was 5 years old, music has been a big part of my life,” Grotevant said. “[Oberlin] seemed to have a really good fit for the experimental and open-ended nature that I was approaching music with.”

What Grotevant will miss most about McCallum  is the opportunity that she sees as readily available for people.

“It’s such a special environment where there are big opportunities for young people that is not the norm everywhere,” Grotevant said.

Her biggest takeaway and advice from high school is to take advantage of opportunities even when they are intimidating.

“Even when it’s scary or something you haven’t done before, there’s a lot of value in trying something new and collaborating with others,” Grotevant said.
