Busted, Download Festival 2024

REVIEW: After 20 years, Busted have finally come to Download. And what a spectacle it is. Well, it's a spectacle to those lucky enough to make it into the Avalanche Stage tent, with the spill-out stretching back 20 deep and then some. Nevertheless, Charlie, James and Matt are making their first experience here one to remember with a setlist full of stone-cold classics. Thanks to their chart-topping 'Greatest Hits 2.0', made up of re-records, there's an extra edge to the likes of 'What I Go To School For' and 'You Said No', both sounding like they were pulled straight from the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater soundtrack. And 'Sleeping With The Light On' is even more tear-stained than it ever was in the early '00s. Also, has a band ever covered Hanson's 'MMMBop' with this much vibrancy and vigour, let alone on a patch of land so sacred in metal history? There's a real spring in the trio's step, and they have truly never sounded fresher or more fired up than this. Whatever comes next will be fascinating, but for tonight, Download belongs to the loser kids.
