Congratulations to Alicia’s fellow alum, Shacafrica Simmons, owner and culinary architect of Chef Shac LLC. Her Soul Roll recipe appears with Alicia’s Perfect Vanilla Cake in the new Beard Foundation cookbook.

Shacafrica believes that food can lift the spirit. Her soul rolls are a combination of Southern soul and a Chinese takeout classic, in which seasoned rice, black-eyed peas, aromatics, and collard greens are encased in an eggroll wrapper, deep-fried, and served with a sweet-and-smoky dipping sauce. Mmmmmmm!

Shacafrica is among the talented women chefs with a recipe included in the new James Beard Foundation cookbook, A Place at the Table, which features signature recipes from 20 honored alums of the Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Program.

Alicia and Shacafrica participated in The Women’s Entrepreneurial Leadership Program, a visionary collaboration between The James Beard Foundation and Audi, founded to recognize, uplift, and celebrate the innumerable contributions of women in the culinary field.

Showcasing each fabulous woman chef in this cookbook is our way of paying it forward and supporting the visionary women working to make the restaurant industry more equitable, vibrant, and diverse.
