In the early 1990’s there were few climbers in the Squamish area that could touch 5.13, and the guy who consistently tore through it was Jim Sandford. In fact, it was Jim who almost single handedly put 5.13 on the map up here. Not only did he itinerantly climb these brutal, incredibly technical routes, he also established most of them. The Cacodemon Caves below the Chief were a favourite haunt of Jim’s, where he crafted such fine classics as Permanent Waves (13c), Archives (12d), Technical Ecstasy (13b), Youngblood (13b), and Bravado (13d). When it came to hard sport climbing Jim had few equals, although it was his wife Jola who most often came close, and she was likely the strongest female climber in Canada at the time. Squamish sport climbing changed forever when Cheakamus Canyon was discovered in the early ‘90s, and now-classic walls such as the Circus, Main Event and the Big Show began to reveal harder, more futuristic lines. The massive overhanging sheet of the Big Show was first climbed by Keith Reid to an arbitrary finish, and was later extended by Jola Sandford on what is now known as Freewill (originally Got Jabbar). Jim got straight to work on one of the Sea to Sky corridor’s most coveted hard climbs, Division Bell (13d), named after Pink Floyd’s 1994 vinyl masterpiece. Naming routes after progressive rock albums was a well-known habit of Jim’s, and if you look at his legacy of routes today you’ll see a long list of RUSH and Floyd albums, including Pulse, Canada’s first 14a, which Jim sent after an epic battle in 1995. Here’s an old film grab of him on Division Bell sporting the raddest duds of the time, the pyjama like Stonewear from Metolius. Stonewear came with a retail hangtag of this shot, which was the first climbing photo I ever sold.
