Imported from New York: Warhol's Journey Through China is graciously presented by entrepreneur, entertainment and communications industry executive and philanthropist, Lee Caplin. The exhibition invites visitors to delve into the captivating travel experiences of the iconic artist Andy Warhol during his visit to China in 1982. This unique exhibition combines the artistic vision of renowned photographer Christopher Makos and the captivating storytelling of filmmaker Lee Caplin to recreate Warhol's enthralling exploration of a newly opened China.
Warhol was invited to visited Hong Kong by a young Chinese entrepreneur Alfred Siu, who was launching a trendy nightclub showcasing Warhol's portraits, including those of Princess Diana and Prince Charles. Eager to expand his artistic horizons, Warhol endeavored to meet the notoriously extravagant Imelda Marcos, the First Lady of the Philippines in hopes of creating a portrait of her. Despite this ambition, the meeting never materialized. However, upon his return to the United States, Warhol was fortunate to receive commissioned portraits from affluent Chinese patrons he had encountered in Hong Kong.
