Women and girls are disproportionately affected by #ClimateChange.⁣
⁣
Across the world, women are 80% more likely to be displaced by #climate shocks like the huge floods in Pakistan, droughts in Kenya as well as heat waves and extreme storms. These climate shocks force women and young girls further into vulnerability by affecting their capability to provide for themselves and their families. Very often, they are forced into dangerous and violent circumstances just to survive.⁣
⁣
Women produce up to 80% of the world’s food. They are often the primary caregivers and food providers for their families, which makes them particularly vulnerable to locust swarms, malnutrition and droughts. Historical discrimination has also left women without access to key resources such as land which affects their food security drastically.⁣
⁣
The #ClimateCrisis and environmental degradation are fuelling #GenderBasedViolence. Women and gender minorities at the forefront of environmental resistance movements are a prime target of violence. They are threatened, intimidated, attacked, or killed while defending their homes, communities, land, livelihoods, and ecosystems vital for biodiversity and the climate.⁣
⁣
When world leaders meet to make decisions on climate change, women are underrepresented and excluded. Women made up less than 34% of country negotiating teams at #COP27.⁣
⁣
#ClimateJustice means #GenderJustice. The struggle for a healthy and peaceful planet inherently requires equity and respect for all who live on it. Environmental destruction cannot be fought without fighting sexism and the violence associated with it.⁣
