"We lack a language for speaking honestly about suicide because we find the topic so hard to think about, at once so deeply unpleasant and gruesomely compelling." In Notes on Suicide from #fitzcarraldoeditions Simon Critchley discusses the dichotomy of suicide as the true expression of freedom as well as the ultimate act of criminality and sacrilege, much like Hunter S. Thompson when he said he'd feel truly trapped if he couldn't take his own life: "If life is a gift, then it is given to its recipient with no strings attached." In Every Fox is a Rabid Fox, my narrator struggles to find an answer to the question: why continue? He's stuck between continuing his life as normal after a catastrophic event which deals the death blow to his already waning family, and punishing his father, who he blames for what he considers his own inadequacies; inadequacies built on an outdated and toxic definition of what it is to be a man, passed down to him by his childhood male role models.
