So, this is the part where I get sappy and emotional for the experience that not only I but my family have been through over the past month. My grandfather’s passing was sudden and truly caught us all off-guard. My Zayda was a fixture in my life, my family’s life, the lives of his friends, and kids that he had coached. He was someone that you always thought was going to be around, whose words of wisdom would be ever-flowing.

To be welcomed in with open arms after such a personally challenging loss by the girls that he had coached will forever mean the world to me. Not only that, but to have the team come together to be there for my family was one of the most touching moments of that entire day of the funeral. Every single game that I went to, the girls on the team were happy to see me. They embraced the camera and rose to the occasion every single time they got up to the plate or went onto the field.

I think about how proud he would have been with this team. How he would’ve come home to the dinner table, newspapers in tow, telling us all how excited he was that the girls he’d coached had won the first Class C softball championship since 1993. He knew that the seniors were closing an incredible chapter in their life and beginning a new one as they headed off to college. It was all about setting the girls up for success as they became young women. He would have loved this.

You pulled through, persevered, and brought an incredible amount of joy to myself and a family still reeling from the loss of someone who was a rock in our lives.

Lohud was right— we just lived through a Hollywood movie that you couldn’t have scripted a better ending to if you tried your hardest.

Thank you for honoring my grandfather’s legacy in the exact way that he would’ve wanted you to.
