Could the South Island Kōkako be hiding in the Rollowan Forest? The expedition team searching for the lost bird has newfound hope. 

Last month a local New Zealander reported seeing a large gray bird with a long tail flying overhead, gliding across a clearing, and making a distinct sound like a high-pitched chime. Our partners at The South Island Kōkako Charitable Trust (southislandkokao) believe this sighting in the Rowallan Forest in Southland to be a probable encounter––noting that it occurred just a few miles from a similar sighting almost a decade ago. 

The South Island Kōkako is one of our most wanted #LostSpecies and one of the top 10 most wanted #LostBirds by the Search for Lost Birds. There hasn’t been a confirmed sighting of a South Island Kōkako since 2007, but with support from allbirds for these expeditions, we may be getting closer to a confirmed rediscovery.
