#EndangeredSpeciesDay is a day to reflect on the importance of biodiversity and ways we can best protect our most threatened species. Today, we’re highlighting #lostspecies wildlife that were once lost to science that have been rediscovered. A rediscovery can be the catalyst to help Critically Endangered species recover and set long-term conservation efforts in motion. 

1- Jackson’s Climbing Salamander

Rediscovered in 2017, the Jackson’s Climbing Salamander, aka the "golden wonder," was the first species from Re:wild's top 25 most wanted list to be found since its disappearance in 1975. Our partner FUNDAECO, worked with park guards at the Yal Unin Yul Witz Reserve in Guatemala to find it—hosting workshops and hanging posters with photos of the salamander. The publicity paid off because one guard spotted it during his lunch break! This led to the expansion of the reserve with support from Re:wild and rainforesttrust.

2-Fernandina Galapagos Tortoise

Officially rediscovered in 2021, the Fernandina Galápagos Tortoise marked the seventh rediscovery from Re:wild’s original top 25 most wanted lost species. The species had been lost for 115 years—the longest of any other on the most wanted list. The expedition that found the tortoise, named Fernanda (also Fern), was led by the Galápagos National Park Directorate (parquegalapagos) and galapagosconservancy, supported by Discovery’s Animal Planet.

3-Santa Marta Sabrewing

A local birdwatcher in Colombia rediscovered the rare Santa Marta Sabrewing, a hummingbird found in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains. With only two previous sightings in 1946 and 2010, this elusive bird made the top 10 most wanted list of the #SearchforLostBirds.

4-Northern Haiti Magnolia

In 2021, after it was believed to be locally extinct for 97 years, the majestic Magnolia, re-emerged in all its glory, giving hope to conservationists in Haiti, where deforestation has left just 1% of original forests remaining. This is all thanks to an expedition crew from our partner, Haiti_National_Trust.
