Congrats to the communities in Ecuador’s Intag Valley for their momentous legal win, which will protect their home and the wildlife in it! The Imbabura Provincial Court revoked the mining license for the controversial Llurimagua copper project in Intag’s biodiverse cloud forest. This decision is a significant victory for the people of Intag Valley—who for decades have been fighting to protect their community forest and freshwater from mining—and for the rights of nature. Ecuador was the first country in the world to enshrine the rights of nature in its constitution in 2008. 

The Llurimagua mining project posed significant danger to the Intag-Toisan Key Biodiversity Area, which is an important place for the overall health of the planet and critical for the persistence of biodiversity on Earth. The lush forests of Intag Valley are home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the Critically Endangered Brown-headed Spider Monkey, Andean Bear, and the newly discovered Intag’s Resistance Rocket Frog (named by supporters like you!).

Let’s celebrate this momentous occasion and continue to support communities, like those in Intag Valley, who are protecting our planet for future generations.
