Avenged Sevenfold, Download Festival 2024

REVIEW: Avenged Sevenfold have headlined Donington Park before, but it's never felt anything like this. That could be because, in the time between, they have evolved in ways the past versions of themselves would never have imagined they could. And as they admit this might be the only time they get to do this on this side of the Atlantic for quite some time, to say they are going in all guns blazing as curtain closers for this year's festivities would be an understatement. 
Upon the release of their latest album, the endlessly ambitious and progressively grand 'Life Is But a Dream...' A7X stated that it was a body of work made to be listened to from front to back. They should have added that the songs need to be experienced live as well to really peel back the layers and reveal the genius within. 'Game Over' is all the thrashier, 'We Love You' all the heavier and 'Nobody' all the more exploratory when delivered with the raw spontaneity of the here and now. And when sandwiched between a spine-tingling 'Afterlife', a rambunctious 'Bat Country' and a poignant 'Buried Alive', they sound properly masterful. True modern classics in waiting. 
The surprises don't stop there, with the biggest one being the sound suddenly cutting out during the bludgeoning climax of 'Nightmare'. Yet, in true Download style, the crowd continues to sing despite the silence on stage, so loud that the heavens should be able to hear them. And when things do get back on track, their devotion is rewarded with a barrage of breakdowns via a welcome run-through of 'Unholy Confessions'. It's a huge unifying moment, with the band and assembled fans feeling intense, cathartic relief in unison.
Overcoming adversity is something that Avenged are well acquainted with, and tonight feels like they have once again taken huge personal strides in a manner only they could. Proving the worth of their most ambitious visions, rolling back the years with elevated ease and reminding everyone why they are still one of metal's biggest and best; it's all a day's work for the Deathbats Club.
