🎓Congratulations, Charlie

Charlie Bertsch (aka Choppa Chaz) (aka Chaz), was one of our inspiring captains of the team who never failed to bring a smile to our faces. He’s funny, caring, and determined to bring the best out of others. You can always count on him to bring a positive attitude to practice. If you come around the boathouse you’ll hear him crack a joke that is bound to make the whole team laugh or hear him yelling at the rest of the guys to zip it up while we stretch. 

Charlie rowed all 4 years of his high school career, starting on the freshman team where he made the 1F. Even with Covid limiting training, he put up a strong semi-final finish at Stotes.

During Charlie’s sophomore year his personality really started to shine. Though he was racing with the 2V crew, the 1v team had to have him in their group chat. During 2022 not only did the 1v have a great year but Charlie contributed to possibly the fastest 2v in JR history where they made the finals in both SRAA’s and Stotes, an unprecedented accomplishment by a JR 2v. Charlie also brought the heat at Youth Nationals where the 2v had a photo finish to win the D Finals, securing their position among some of the fastest 2V’s in the nation.

Charlie’s junior and senior year he led the team as an upper class man and as a captain in the 1v where he won races like the SHOP and the Walter Mess Regatta.  This whole year Chaz lead by example and kept us all on task. He was a great communicator and formed relationships with everyone on the team. It didn’t matter what boat you were in, Charlie genuinely cared about you as a teammate. Moral was always high with the boys when Charlie was around. He did great things for this program over the last four years and will be greatly missed. We wish him the best as he takes his his leadership, humility, and humor down to South Carolina.
