Hi EVMS community! Here is my Day 2 update from the PA Program’s “Kenneth LeGree Hallman, MD Memorial Lecture Series: Patient-Centered Approach to Identification and Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder.” I have to start with Dr. Stephanie Peglow from EVMS Psychiatry, who stole the show with her sing-along pneumonic for substance use disorder specifiers 🎤 Students also completed and presented group assignments to reinforce the ASAM criteria for adult levels of care. Now we all know how to connect our patients with the appropriate resources in the local area and beyond. Here in Norfolk, we can also connect our patients directly with a peer counselor via the Norfolk CSB warm line at 757-664-6683 📞🤝 Dr. David Langille, a founding member of Right Path Addiction Treatment Centers and Emergency Medicine Alumni ‘91, led a compelling discussion with the help of one of his patients in recovery. Shane and Dr. Langille demonstrated that with a little education and a lot of compassion, we can all be equipped in ER and primary care settings to identify and treat substance use disorder. Stay tuned in the coming months for an update on what Dr. Langille and others are doing in Chesapeake to create a warm handoff for their patients from the ER to addiction treatment services. Feel free to leave encouraging words for Shane below! His strength and courage is beyond remarkable, and we have invited him back next year! 💪🏻🤩 To end the day, we all completed our REVIVE! training and will be picking up our free Narcan prescriptions from the health department. Hope they’re stocked up!
