Àmàlà is a staple swallow food native to the Yoruba ethnic group of Southwestern Nigeria. It is made of yam, cassava flour, or unripe plantain flour.Tubers of yams are peeled, sliced, cleaned, dried and then ground into flour. Yams are white in colour but turn brown when dried which gives àmàlà its colour. It is usually served with a soup stew, such as Ewedu, gbegiri, Okro soup, Egusi Soup, efo riro, and Ogbono Soup

The texture of Amala is soft, smooth, and slightly elastic, with a distinct earthy flavor. The distinct earthy taste is the reason why it cannot be eaten alone without serving with soups or stews

In Nigeria, Amala is not just food; it is a cultural identity. It is a symbol of the Yoruba tribe and is often served at important events such as weddings and funerals. It is an all-time favorite and a constant on the menu of most local restaurants, and it is also a common meal for families to enjoy together.

It is highly rich in antioxidants that help to fight free radicals in the body. It reduces the risk of cancer and inflammation and prevents cell damage.
