Closing out our #BlackHistoryMonth spotlights on some of the most influential African American women in sports, we would like to recognize the remarkable Cherie Greer Brown!

Recognized as an outstanding player, Greer attained the distinction of being a 3X collegiate All-American and was crowned the NCAA Division I Defensive Player of the Year in 1994. During that same season, she topped the nation in scoring with an impressive tally of 61 goals and 18 assists. Throughout her collegiate journey, Greer's prowess contributed significantly to the Cavaliers' success, leading them to clinch two NCAA championships in 1991 and 1993. Her stellar performances consistently earned her First Team All-America honors in '92, '93, and '94. Such remarkable achievements culminated in her being the first lacrosse player to have her jersey retired at the University of Virginia, cementing her legacy as one of the sport's all-time greats.

Greer also boasts a remarkable club lacrosse playing career spanning 14 years, earning accolades such as the Beth Allen Award at the US Lacrosse Women’s Division National Tournament in 2000. She proudly represented the United States on the 1993, 1997, 2001, and 2005 U.S. Women’s World Cup teams, clinching three world championships during her tenure. She as also the First Black Captain of a usa_wlax team. Notably, she was distinguished as the most outstanding player in the championship games of the 1997 and 2001 World Cups. Her exceptional talent led to her inclusion in the Lacrosse Magazine All-Century Team in 2000. Greer's illustrious career has been immortalized through inductions into esteemed institutions such as the US Lacrosse Philadelphia/Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter Hall of Fame, the US Lacrosse Charlottesville Chapter Hall of Fame, and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Additionally, she was honored with the Tewaaraton Legends Award in 2017.
