Let's #GetOutside and witness the power of the sun! 🌞😎

Today we're going to learn how to harness the sun's energy for ooey gooey goodness. 🍫
🍕Grab a pizza box, some black paper, tin foil, tape, a glass bowl, something to prop up your pizza box, and s'mores supplies!

1) Place your black paper down on the pizza box. Different colors will absorb and reflect sunlight differently. Lighter colors reflect more sunlight, and darker colors absorb more sunlight. When light is absorbed like this, it creates HEAT.

2) Place your tin foil on the top part inside of your pizza box. Use tape to secure it. This will help reflect even MORE sunlight into your solar oven. Have you ever stood in a spot where a window from a large building was reflecting more sunlight onto you? Did you notice how it felt warmer? It's the same effect!

3) Place your s'mores on top of your black paper and place your glass bowl on top. This will create a GREENHOUSE effect. When your black paper absorbs light it converts it into heat - specifically infrared light! (Infrared light comes before the visible color red on the spectrum, "infra" means before!) Glass blocks infrared light from escaping, so it traps the heat inside to help cook your s'mores!

4) Prop your lid up with a paper towel roll, or a ruler, or a metal straw, or even another piece of cardboard! Point your box directly at the sun and then let your s'mores cook! ⏰

Depending on how hot your day is, your s'mores could be ready in 15min-30 min! Remember to carefully remove the glass bowl with an oven mitt, as it’ll be hot.

Experiment! Using a food thermometer, check the temperature of the ground outside your solar oven. Then leave your food thermometer inside your bowl. How much hotter does it get? What else do you think you could cook in there?

Take a picture and let me know how your solar ovens turn out – tag us outsideologistproject and join me on September 20th for a LIVE demo of this fun project with ClaritinUSA!
