Maverick Smith continues June push with Reno Rodeo Xtreme Bulls victory.

The calendar wasn't the only thing to flip when June began three weeks ago.

Since the new month started, second-year bull rider Maverick Smith has found himself on a literal tear, flipping a mental switch to pick up some big outcomes and inch his way up the PRCA | RAM World Standings. That streak continued Thursday night as the Mountain Grove, Mo., native snagged a victory at the Reno (Nev.) Rodeo Division 1 Xtreme Bulls event.

"I don't know (what's going on). I've just been drawing good for the most part," said Smith, who earned $17,018 for his Reno performance.

Beginning with Rodeo Celina in Parker, Texas, at the start of the month, Smith notched a trio of runner-up finishes, taking second at Rodeo Celina, the Parker County (Texas) Sheriff's Posse Frontier Days Xtreme Bulls and the Stockon (Mo.) Lake PRCA Rodeo.

Thursday's victory in Reno was his second championship of the year. Back on March 2, Smith won his first PRCA event at the Xtreme Bull Bash in Lufkin, Texas.

Smith, 20, opened the competition by placing fourth in the first go, with an 85-point ride on Rosser Rodeo's Sweet Justice. In the finals, Smith won the round, going on an 89-point trip on Western Rodeos' Macho Man. In both cases, he became the first cowboy to ride either bull this season. Sweet Justice had bucked off all four previous competitors, while Macho Man had bested three other foes. HIs 174 points on two-head was good enough to hold off Hawk Whitt at 167.5 points.

All told, the month of June has already brought in $25,509 for Smith's ledger. By comparison, he earned just $28,025 during his entire rookie campaign in 2023, finishing 75th overall in the world standings. With the win in Reno, he now has more than $71,300 in earnings for the season.

"It's everything, especially starting off summer this way. It'll give me a good jump on the year and I'll just keep going at them," Smith said.

With his biggest professional outcome so far, Smith is intent on keeping the momentum rolling. He'll head to Minnesota this weekend for a pair of rodeos before coming back to Reno early next week to ride at the Reno Rodeo on Tuesday.

One thing is certain – Smith's confidence is soaring and this time of year that's certainly a good thing.

"It's definitely high. When I get back to my buddy's house, he'll probably tell me my ego is getting big," Smith joked.
