For this project, I chose to film my good friend Nick doing the one thing he loves the most: playing music on his radio show at IU’s WIUX pure student radio station. Instead of using my voice, I cut some of Nick’s voice out of the video file, aligned it with the video shots that matched what he was saying, and then merged both the audio files and video shots together to create a seamless transition. At the beginning of this short film, I incorporated a laid-back instrumental track that I found on freemusicarchive.com because I wanted the music to catch the listener’s attention. Later, the narration of Nick’s voice was added in since I thought that if the audience heard Nick’s voice, it would make the story more personal. I found it different incorporating background music in the video project rather than just an audio voice-over because you really have to spend a large amount of time mixing the sound levels and making sure one file does not overpower the other file. Ideally, I wanted the voice-over to be louder than the background music since that is what the audience will be paying more attention to, but I also didn’t want the voice-over to be so loud that the audience couldn’t hear any of the music. The same concept applies to making sure the background music isn’t so loud that the audience can’t hear the voice-over and miss key sentences or words. At first, I thought about using one of Nick’s songs that he plays on his radio show as background music for his DJ Spotlight video. I tried using “Walcott” by Vampire Weekend, but as soon as I laid it over the video and voice-over, I found myself paying more attention to the song’s lyrics than the voice-over and didn’t catch what Nick was saying. My main element of my digital video was to create a piece that explained characteristics of my friend’s life, not a digital video about a specific band’s song.
Before this project, I had edited videos and inserted transitions, yet this project only signified that a tripod is a must when filming shots. I didn’t notice until I was editing the video, but some of my shots in the frames were shaky and needed stabilization. A challenging part for me was making sure I filmed enough b-roll shots in order to fill up my time frame. Usually when I film something, I think I have enough b-roll film, yet I sometimes come up short and I didn’t want to have to use the same footage twice in the video because I don’t like that repetitive nature of videos. Surprisingly, I found that I preferred my close-up, zoomed-in shots better than my far away, zoomed-out shots because I thought it gave the audience a sense that they were in the radio station with Nick, hearing him talk live.
