#MushroomMonday Psilocybe weraroa captured by alan_rockefeller :📸 Read on this a funky one. This "hallucinogenic pouch fungus" of New Zealand grows on rotting wood and contains psil*cybin but they stand apart from most of the mushroom cousins you may know and love in that this species is "secotioid" meaning they keep their spores in a closed cap, as opposed to dispersing them in the air through gills. Instead, they are spread, as stated by mycologist alan_rockefeller in a previous post, by insects and birds. 🍄

It turns out that mushrooms like these are linked to the potential of a temporary condition known as "wood lovers paralysis." It's rare but has been experienced by a number of individuals after eating select species of magic mushrooms that.. grow on wood, hence the name. Reports relay a phenomenon in which the user experiences a form of paralysis after ingesting them, more often in (but not limited to) the hands and legs.

Dr. Sarah Present, MD, in a research paper titled: "Wood Lover’s Paralysis (WLP) review" writes that this condition is most 'widespread' in Australia and 'appears to be caused exclusively by mushrooms that grow on wood.'

According to this recent review, effects can include 'incoordination' and the loss of some level of motor control to complete / near complete paralysis, as well as the loss of motor function in the face / eyes, including the inability to chew. Functions most often affected: Walking (80%, about 53% completely unable to walk at some point), swallowing (26%) and breathing (17%). Users report that the effects are delayed, come in waves, and don't sound fun.. but symptoms resolve within 24 hours. There are theories as to the cause, but thus far it's largely speculation and still under investigation.

According to Dr. Simon Beck in a Business Insider piece, there have been 'hundreds of reports of people saying they'd been unable to control parts of their body hours after' taking these wood-growin' mushies. "With the #woodloversparalysis, it's true weakness," he said. "You couldn't move, even if you had to." 😳
