Setting a new benchmark among BMW M, for the first time ever in the E39 Sedan was fitted with a 400hp 5.0 litre V8 engine, making it the most powerful M car in the model range at the time.

At the turn of the century the BMW M5 embraced the new technologies of the time with a naturally aspirated V10 heart similar to the Formula 1 cars of the era with an outstanding 507 hp.
