Freeze Frames. It was quite an eventful Saturday night over in Minnesota as the ‘Loons’ hosted Nashville SC in their home opener. With below-freezing conditions ahead of kickoff, many worried that play would suffer. Still, the rain, sleet, and snow weren’t enough to stop Mukhtar and CJ Sapong from heating up early in the first half, with the latter tapping in a well-worked routine in the 5th minute. The Mukhtar-Sapong duo worked wonders in 2021, and it looks like this year they’ll be at it again. The rest of the half didn’t disappoint either as both teams were denied goals by the woodwork. It seemed as if the second half would give us more of the same back-and-forth action between both sides, but the freezing temperatures and a lightning strike in the area would finally end up dampening the match. Play was halted in the 53’ and it wouldn’t resume until over an hour later. With the pitch now heavily soaked and the players clearly returning rusty from the break, the game became sloppy and stretched. Still, there would be one last ray of hope for the Loons in their home opener. Hassani Dotson took advantage of a set piece in the 71’ to put his side level, and it seemed like a comeback could be on. The stands flared up with chants and support, but the game would ultimately end in a tie. Both sides split the points, and they were probably just happy to get back into the locker room. Who can blame them.
