Looking back at one of the most iconic moments in golf history ⬇️

25 years ago, 10-time PGA TOUR winner Payne Stewart arrived early to Pinehurst, coming off a missed cut in Memphis the week before. Despite a course setup that seemed to favor long hitters, the 42-year-old focused on approaches, pitches and chips, writing meticulous notes in his yardage book.

Stewart shot a 2-under 68, sitting at T5 after the first round. On Friday, he tied the lowest score of the second round with a 1-under 69. Difficult conditions on Saturday led to a third-round 72 and Stewart led by one heading into the final round.

Round 4 of the 1999 U.S. Open brought forth plenty of drama. On the 15th hole, Payne Stewart and Phil Mickelson were tied for the lead. On the 16th hole, Stewart pars and Mickelson bogeys. On 17, Stewart birdies to head to 18 with a one-shot lead.

On the 18th hole, Stewart’s tee shot found the right rough, his worst lie of the entire tournament. He rallied to get his third shot on the green, 15 feet from the hole … and the rest is history.

Hours after claiming his third major title, with a Bud Light in hand, Payne Stewart and his caddie Mike Hicks made their way to Mebane, NC to play a charity outing at Mill Creek Golf Club the next morning alongside Hal Sutton, Fred Couples and Paul Azinger. They arrived at midnight and kept the party going until 4 a.m., drinking Cristal and moonshine from the trophy.

Payne Stewart died four months later in a plane crash, but his legacy continues to live on to this day. In 2000, the Payne Stewart Award presented by Southern Company was created to honor a player whose values align with the character, charitable mindset, and sportsmanship that Stewart showed. He was posthumously inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001.
