Long before Ann Coulter was owning the libs or Dana Loesch was promoting guns for the NRA or Tomi Lahren was calling out liberal “snowflakes” on The Blaze (and now on Fox Nation), Phyllis Schlafly was making America’s broadcast media rounds, setting the mold as a conservative woman with a distinct ability to make liberals apoplectic, and the marketing chops to build a brand around that skill.⁣

Many of the tools she used in debates would be familiar to viewers of today’s polemicized TV: a commoditized femininity; a string of ad hominem arguments; a willingness to play to her audience’s fears (of a draft for women, of unisex bathrooms); a looseness with the facts when it served a rhetorical purpose. But especially striking, and especially valuable, was a sense that she truly enjoyed being the object of liberal ire.⁣
