💥Should you use an arm swing when you test your athletes?

This is a question that has been around since force plates first entered into the world of human performance. 

The short answer is: neither is right nor wrong...it depends what you’re looking to assess. 

Non-Arm Swing
• Pros: Eliminates upper body movement which yields a “cleaner” force-time curve, which makes it easier to assess minute changes over time (I.e. fatigue, readiness). It also makes the jump a true test of lower body dynamic strength. 
• Cons: Might take the athlete longer to learn how to jump without arms. Their jump height will be lower and the athlete may become discouraged (educating your athlete is 🔑 here). 

Arm Swing
• Pros: This will be the athlete’s maximal vertical jumping capability. Their jump height will be higher because they are able to generate more momentum with the use of an arm swing. A test of their whole body dynamic strength and coordination ability between upper and lower half.
• Cons: The force-time curve shape will not be as consistent, or “clean”. Propulsive side will most likely show a double peak. If you use the force-time trace for profiling (I.e. shape) then the use of an arm swing might make it more difficult to draw insight, as arm swing is more variable (especially with less experienced athletes)

🔍Our Recommendation
•We suggest using the Non-Arm Swing for monitoring purposes, and Arm Swing when assessing performance ability. For example, a team might use the CMJ arm swing daily/weekly, and then use the CMJ non-arm swing after each training phase to assess changes with training
