💥 Interpreting Dynamic Strength Index (DSI)

DSI has been around for some time — it evolved from Vladimir Zatsiorsky’s Explosive Strength Deficit (ESD) that was first introduced in the 1990s

It gives coaches & practitioners a glance into how effective an athlete can express their maximum force ability in ballistic exercise — which ultimately might give insight into how well an athlete applies their force capabilities in sport

DSI is simply a ratio of peak isometric force & peak ballistic force. Typically, this is calculated using the Isometric Mid-Thigh Pull (IMTP) & a Countermovement Jump (CMJ) — pulling peak force values from both tests. However, DSI can also be calculated using different isometric tests such as the isometric belt squat, or isometric back squat. Some researchers have even used the Squat Jump (SJ) or Drop Jump (DJ) as the ballistic measure. We believe that best practice is to use the CMJ peak force compared to an isometric test of your choice. Just remember to keep tests consistent when comparing overtime

DSI is scored on a scale of 1.0 — 1.0 would indicate that the athlete is capable of displaying 100% of their maximal force producing capabilities in ballistic movement
