Originally designated as Armistice Day in 1919, observing the conclusion of World War I (WWI) one year prior, Veterans Day is now an opportunity to commemorate the contributions of all past Americans who served honorably in the armed forces. The holiday’s beginnings in “the Great War” are apt given the unprecedented scale of the conflict and its lasting impacts on families and agencies that supported returning soldiers. It was a time of expansion and standardization of support systems for those coping with the physical and psychological trauma of industrialized warfare.

The article linked in our bio from our former Lord Baltimore Fellow, Dr. Evan P. Sullivan, draws from library materials at the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC) to dive deep into the history of General Hospital No. 7 in Baltimore City. Built on the grounds of the Garrett estate, this complex featured workshops, gardens, and other facilities specially designed to rehabilitate and teach new life skills to blinded returning soldiers–a heartbreakingly common injury given the prominent use of gas and grenades in WWI. Today, many of these buildings are repurposed to serve students at the Loyola University Maryland campus.

MCHC joins those throughout the country who commend the sacrifices and spirit of our past and present servicemembers. #veterans #maryland #history #WWI
