June welcomes Pride Month -- an opportune time to explore the voices and stories of the LGBTQ+ community through the materials in the museum and library collections at the Maryland Center for History and Culture (MCHC). 

Did you know Maryland was the first state south of the Mason-Dixon line to legalize same-sex marriage? On November 6, 2012, Marylanders voted for the passage of Question 6, a bill that allowed for nuptials between same-sex couples. Upon learning of the passing of the Civil Marriage Protection Act, Ryan Wilson and his partner Shehan Welihindha decided to travel to Wilson’s home state of Maryland to marry on New Year’s Day, the day the bill went into effect. On January 1, 2013, Wilson and Welihindha married at Baltimore City Hall, becoming one of the first same-sex couples to wed in the state.
