As we continue to celebrate American Indian Heritage Month and approach the Thanksgiving holiday, MCHC acknowledges and honors the indigenous residents of the Chesapeake region. Numerous indigenous nations inhabited the area before the arrival of European settlers, and many still maintain a presence today.

Among them are the Piscataway Conoy Tribe. If you live or work in the DMV/Western Bank of the Chesapeake, you are on Piscataway Land! The tribal leadership has provided several suggestions for how you can celebrate American Indian Heritage Month, while respecting and advancing the goals of the community:

Acknowledge the original inhabitants of the land you are currently living on by doing your research and learning more about the history of our tribe, Piscataway Conoy Tribe.

AND/OR 

Donate to local Indigenous and tribal organizations. www.throughpiscatawayeyes.org The Piscataway Conoy Tribe has no land of their own. Please donate money or land to the Piscataway Land Trust! 501(c)3 Non Profit for the Piscataway Conoy Tribe.
