Today is #NationalHorseDay. A Marylander was one of the first Americans to start a “stock farm” to improve domestic livestock using a settled and permanent plan. Read about his devotion to improving horses by selective breeding in “John S. Skinner’s American Farmer: Breeding and Racing the Maryland ‘Blood Horse,’ 1819–1829” in this throwback issue of the “Maryland Historical Magazine” (76.2, June 1981). Skinner was instrumental in the development of a “stud book” to keep track of horse pedigrees.
