Happy Halloween! #DYK the Ouija board was invented in Baltimore? During the 19th century, the spiritualist movement grew, and Charles Kennard of Baltimore saw the opportunity to create a device that claims to connect with the beyond.

In 1890, at a boarding house located at 529 North Charles Street, Kennard, investor Elijah Bond, and medium Helen Peters, asked the board what they should call it. The board spelled out “O-U-I-J-A.” They asked what it meant, and the board spelled, “good luck.”

Today, 529 North Charles Street is a 7-Eleven convenience store. Since its creation, the Ouija board has been part of American pop culture, appearing in Rockwell paintings, movies like "The Exorcist," and TV shows including "Breaking Bad." Tell us your favorite Halloween tradition in the comments below!
