## Caption

There are many styles and approaches to writing in a diary or journaling. Some people write every day in short sentences or lists that get right to the point, while others may write more sporadically but in long streams of consciousness. 

How do you approach writing in a diary or journaling?

William Faris (1728-1804) of Annapolis, Maryland used his diary to methodically record the weather as well as the status of his garden and plants. His flowers, which he named after his many friends and later pressed and preserved, were especially important to him and were featured prominently throughout his writing.

You can read an excerpt from the Faris diary in the library exhibition "Intimate Expressions: Personal Diaries of Maryland Life" and catch a glimpse of the world through the eyes of Marylanders from the 18th-20th centuries. See it Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Museum admission is FREE this Second Saturday, August 14.
